Road to Giethoorn

Turn Long Car Rides into a Game: Road to Giethoorn Scavenger Hunt

If you’ve ever taken a road trip with kids, you know the moment is coming:
“Are we there yet?”

Long drives especially from Amsterdam or other parts of the Netherlands can test even the most patient little travelers. That’s exactly why I created the “Road to Giethoorn” scavenger hunt, a simple printable activity that turns the journey itself into an adventure.

What Is the Road to Giethoorn Game?

It’s a printable PDF designed for kids to use during a car ride. Each child gets a sheet and a pen or crayons. As they look out the window, they mark or color the things they spot along the way.

Instead of passively sitting in the back seat, they actively explore their surroundings. Every field, bridge, or passing vehicle becomes part of the game.

What Can Kids Spot?

The scavenger hunt is built around typical Dutch landscapes and road trip sights, making it both fun and educational.

Animals

  • White-tailed eagle

  • Cows

  • Horses

  • Sheep

Vehicles

  • Sports cars

  • Caravans

  • Tractors

  • Sailboats (visible near water areas)

  • Racing cyclists

Structures & Landmarks

  • Opening bridges

  • Windmills

  • Wind turbines

These are all things you’re likely to encounter on the way to Giethoorn or anywhere in the Dutch countryside.

Why It Works

This activity does more than just keep kids busy.

  • It encourages observation and curiosity

  • It turns travel time into shared family fun

  • It reduces screen time during the trip

  • It creates a sense of achievement as kids complete their sheet

You’ll probably find yourself joining in too suddenly everyone in the car is looking for the next windmill or cyclist.

Perfect for the Journey to Giethoorn

Giethoorn is one of the most unique destinations in the Netherlands, often called the “Dutch Venice.” But the journey there is just as beautiful, filled with open landscapes, water, and iconic Dutch scenery.

With the “Road to Giethoorn” scavenger hunt, the trip becomes part of the destination.

Download and Play
